Albert F. Monroe Magnet Middle School is making quite a name for itself in science, engineering, and mathematics, with students bringing home a record number of trophies and cash awards from local science competitions since 2006.
Dedicated students can take part in Monroe’s Math/Science Magnet Program, which features an accelerated course of study emphasizing technology, science, and algebra. Many Magnet students are also a part of MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement), a statewide college preparation program in which students complete projects and enter math/science competitions.
All Monroe students are held up to high academic standards. In 2005, Monroe students demonstrated their academic ability by making a 40-point gain on the state’s Academic Performance Index—far beyond their state target of 10 points! As a result, Monroe ranks 9 out of 10 among similar California schools.
Monroe Middle School offers a wide range of clubs and extracurricular activities for students, including Student Council, Chess Club, Computer Club, Algebra Institute, after-school tutoring, Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), National Junior Honor Society, Drill “Steppers” Team, basketball, football, soccer, and cheerleading. Students have access to the school’s state-of-the-art computer lab for school projects. For electives, they can choose from art, chorus, drama, speech, instrumental music, strings, music appreciation, reading, and woodshop.
Monroe students can look forward to the construction of a gymnasium/multipurpose facility with a stage, locker rooms, and a kitchen, scheduled to take place in 2006 as a part of the Measure K school construction and modernization program.
